Of course, those small moments can lead to all that you know about someone, especially a loved one.

This next story is a personal favorite.

The old saying goes “write what you know.” I always thought that was lazy or cheating somehow. I also thought it didn’t apply to me in some way.

After all, what did I know? Suburbia, normalcy, monotony. No great tragedies or dramatic worlds came to me from the soil of what I knew.

But life is funny like that. You think you know the world around you, know every bone in the skeletons housed in your closets, but then something completely new arrives in a place you thought you knew better than anything.

In this case, it came from my father, who over a candlelit dinner at our favorite

Italian place, told me stories of his life I had never heard.

A new skeleton formed, whose bones and shapes I didn’t know.

Now I do, and it took me traveling back 50 years and 9,100km, to a place only known through second hand tales and lullabies.

A place people see on TV screens, and like me that night, don’t know the bones.
